Kunsthaus Miami presents Francis Acea D.B.A. nobody, a solo exhibition by Francis Acea. With his D.B.A. (Doing Business As) exhibition series – this time as “nobody” – Acea impersonates a “fictitious name” that re-presents him in his association with the art gallery. His works find echo in the consumer marketplace and corporate America, where he looks for his artistic inspiration. His works are a sort of symbolic necessities, “fictitious artworks”, conceived and created by the artist (nobody), that are later placed for sale. Acea explains that his work, “…examines critical representations of value in the contemporary marketplace…”, addressing the dual nature of the art world.
In his D.B.A. series, Francis Acea dissociate himself from the notion of the “artist” as a unique creator of valuable work and bring the creative process down to business as usual, where artworks are just consumer products. If seen as a marketplace, the contemporary art world would be no different than Saks Fifth Avenue. Art is a merchandize, and artists mere labor. Not many artists look at the Art World is such fashion. At least they don’t say. Francis Acea however, has shown interest in the collision of art and economics since early in his career. Trained as a designer, his works in contemporary art explore the notion of “value of art” in modern capitalism, at the same time that question the artists’ role within the current state of the art marketplace.
Francis Acea has exhibited in solo and group shows including such venues as Exit Art, NY, The Power Plant Gallery, Toronto (2003), Havana Biennial(2000), Ludwig Forum für Internationale Kunst, Germany (1998), Helsinki City Art Museum, Finland (2001), Royal College of Art, London (1998). Artist residencies include 01.3 ArtPace International Artist in Residency, San Antonio, Texas (2001), Ludwig Stiftung für Kunst und Internationale Verständigung, Germany (1998) and Banff Centre for the Arts, Canada (1997). Acea has traveled extensively giving lectures and presentations on Cuban Contemporary Art to places such as London, Costa Rica, Canada and New York. Francis Acea currently lives and works in Miami.
