An evening that showcases the work of 6 young artists representing Miami-Dade Archdiocesan middle schools will take place on Friday, March 7, 2014 at McCormick Place in Downtown Miami. The ACND Prep’s People’s Choice Student Art Winners Reception will take place at 7:30 p.m. and be followed by a tour of resident artist studios of Eleazar Delgado, Monique Lassooij, Andrea Beloff, Eva Avila, Andres Conde, Karen Kim, and more.
This inaugural event, is the grand finale of Archbishop Curley Notre Dame Prep’s annual Middle School Art Festival that began in December with a selection process, continued with the art being reviewed by Miami art professionals, and ended with an Opening Reception and exhibit that runs through the end of February.
The winner from each of the top 6 participating schools will be exhibited at McCormick Place as part of First Friday Art Walk in Downtown Miami. Typically, the 25,000 sf venue revolves art exhibits and events in the main floor gallery and guests are then invited to tour the three floors of resident artist studios, meet the artists, and see their work.
“Part of the mission at McCormick Place is community outreach,” comments Sean McCormick, Owner and Curator. “We are honored to have an opportunity to showcase tomorrow’s up and coming future artists. What we feel can be most important at the 6 to 8th grade level is to instill a sense of confidence and accomplishment to allow this next generation to follow their creative passion.”
McCormick envisions McCormick Place (Miami’s US Customs warehouse built in 1924) to be an arts epicenter aligned with the rapid growth of cultural activity occurring in Downtown Miami. His father, Edward J. McCormick Sr. still continues a law practice since purchasing the building and converting it into offices in 1970. McCormick Sr. graduated from Archbishop Curley and five of his siblings attended either Archbishop Curley High School or Notre Dame Academy for Girls.
ACND’s art festival, gallery events, and summer visual and performing arts camp are designed to connect students with the art and cultural resources available in Miami.
First Friday Art Walk in Downtown Miami provides a unique experience for all ages to learn about the City’s history and appreciate emerging and established Miami-based artists while learning about the City’s history. “Harry S Truman once said: “The only history that has not happened, is that which you have not read,” concludes McCormick. “Many don’t even realize that one block away from McCormick Place is the site where Julia Tuttle incorporated The City of Miami in 1896. Learning our past while immersed in creativity cultivated by the arts, is forming this new culture we call Downtown. All evidenced by the varied artistic styles that one can experience at our doorstep.”
