Dorsch Gallery

Richard Haden. From Oct 10th through Nov 14th, 2009.

Dorsch Gallery is currently presenting the exhibition Venting by artist Richard Haden. For this show, Richard Haden will present new and recent hyper-realist sculptures.

He sculpts his works from wood and then paints them to uncannily resemble their referents. Haden is also a fierce auto-didact, who takes advantage of the hyper-linked culture that we all have at our fingertips, for instance, he participates in philosophy and cultural studies that are part of a growing online international community who share through open-source education, outside institutional walls; he also contributes to art blogs and participates in lectures that furthers an ongoing critical dialog with current art or cultural practices.

With this exhibition, his material and philosophical skills converge. Haden was born in Frankfort, Kentucky and began his art education at the University of Kentucky. He apprenticed with Robert Bourdon in Sheridan, Wyoming, then he moved to Los Angeles, then the Lower East Side in New York, back to the West Coast, then to South Florida and now Miami.

Shapeshifterd. From Jan 17th through 24th, 2009.   Dorsch Gallery. Miami GalleriesDorsch Gallery is currently presenting a group exhibition titled Shapeshifterd. The Aesthetics and Values Class from the Honors College at Florida International University (FIU) curates this group exhibition in collaboration with Dorsch Gallery. With Shapeshifterd, the class responds substantively to the previous month’s exhibition, Shapeshifter. The class will change the installation of the exhibition and add to it, seeking to question the way curation can affect the way one sees or thinks about a work of art. The exhibition includes work in several media, including paintings, video, projection, sculpture, and mixed media, by Jenny Brillhart, Elisabeth Condon, Robin Griffiths, Richard Haden, Michelle Hailey, m lafille, Martin Murphy, Ralph Provisero, John Sanchez and Kyle Trowbridge. Brandon Opalka. From Sep 13th through Oct 4th, 2008.    Dorsch Gallery. Miami GalleriesIn his solo show at Dorsch Gallery this September, Brandon Opalka meditates on the place where he paints, a space he calls "Yonder." Opalka chose an image that reflects on this idea to announce the exhibition. A sun rises in the background, illuminating his assemblage of model animals and modeling clay. The image is actually two, layered together in Photoshop, marrying the detail of model with the way the light shines through trees outside his studio in Morningside. This intertwining of imagery calls on how, in art history, light represents thought. Here, in this mind space visualized, is Opalka's "Yonder." (more…)

Works by John Sanchez and Kyle Trowbridge. From Sep through Oct, 2007.

Kyle Trowbridge. Miami Art GalleriesDorsch Gallery is presenting the exhibition Variations on a Theme by artist John Sanchez through the months of September and October. Using a traditional process, Sanchez paints various nocturnal commonplace views. His paintings evoke a contemplative if not somber mood. At times Sanchez tightly controls how he handles the paint, while at other times he employs an abstract, loose style. In these tableaux, he aims for the momentary salute to our more quiet emotions.
