Opening reception: June 7, 2013, 7:00 – 10:00 p.m.
From June 7 through August 10, 2013.
Dimensions Variable is presenting a group show that brings together works by Sophia Brown, Ingrid Cologne, Ben Holmberg, Dialaura LeFebvre, Ben Moore, David Kamm, Katelyn Kluge, Hannah Kosgaard, Robbie Scott, Rose Weselman and Teresa Zaffarano from Luther College, Iowa.
All of the works were made through conversations with professors David Kamm, Richard Merritt, Ben Moore, and student peers over the last 3 years; an institution specific system of training for future art-producers. With this in mind, the exhibition can be seen as a survey show, generating a free-flowing organic space that presupposes that somewhere along the way all works find a common ground.
However, the interest is to propose the works as things that are open to the time and local conditions as constructed by the students’ art-instruction. This aim to see beyond the layers of significance and to leave them almost as an object might help – at least in the world of ideas – to unleash them from political constraints and to open an invitation to just participate with them.
The exhibition poses the question, at what point can these works be considered artworks as opposed to things, which function solely as visual exercises?
The Surplus Bulletin was organized by Luther College’s Assistant Professor of Art Ben Moore and visiting artist Odalis Valdivieso.
