From May 30th through June 3rd, 2006Diaspora Vibe presents Goofer Dust by Ayanna Jolivet Mccloud, part of the new Off the Wall: Experimental Lab Series at Diaspora Vibe. Goofer Dust is a performance installation exploring memory, time travel, and Afro-Diasporic ritual. In this newly created work, images, video, sound, and live bodies are interwoven to reveal rituals of dreaming and the inconsistencies of time. Using the body as an ephemeral object, Goofer Dust, frames the body’s relation to time, space, itself, nature, the community and the celestial. An online catalogue with images and text will be presented on labotanica.org. Jolivet Mccloud is a currently an MFA candidate at CalArts in the Photo and Media program. She received a BA in Visual and Critical Studies from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and has participated in exhibits and residencies in Mexico, Spain, The Bahamas and throughout the U.S. Off the Wall/ Experimental Lab Series is a newly formed one to two- week interdisciplinary residency at Diaspora Vibe Gallery in which artists present time-based, out-of-the-box work including performance, video/film screenings, poetry reading, research, sound art, music and workshops. A component of the program includes interacting with the diverse communities of Miami-Dade and engaging the audience in nontraditional ways. Artists are encouraged to activate the neglected space of the gallery and transform the space into a multi-sensory lab. “Off the Wall” provides a forum for 4-D/ new genres art-making and places equal emphasis on the value of the creative process, as well as the finished product.
