Space is the Place. From Aug 14th through Sep 25th, 2008.Diaspora Vibe Gallery, located at 3938 North Miami Avenue in the Design District, presents a new group exhibition of time-based art by artists from Miami and the US, Latin America, the Caribbean, Africa, and Europe. Featuring time-based art, Space is the Place presents video, installation, sound, and performance that redefine traditional definitions of figure, background, object, and audience. The exhibition frames the opening up of art-making as a series of actions, investigations, re-enactments, appropriations, and interventions, which locate art as a social act. Curated by Ayanna Jolivet Mccloud, Space is the Place presents new artworks that reside primarily in the memory, as opposed to more concrete and tangible forms.
Artists include Jamilah Abdul-Sabur, Denenge Akpem, Bibi Calderaro, Odie Rynell Cash, Patrick de Castro, Diana-Sofia Estrada, Fulana (Lisandra Ramos-Grullón, Cristina Ibarra, Andrea Thome, and Marlène Ramírez-Cancio), Inge Hoonte, Claudia Joskowicz, Lara Stein Pardo, Dinorah de Jesús Rodríguez , Jorge Rojas, Elizabeth Ross, Talking Head Transmitters (Eugenia Vargas Pereira and Odalis Valdivieso), Michelle Tupko , Carolina Vasquez, and Russell Watson.
