Clarinetist Paul Green will present a program at the Jewish Museum of Florida on January 19th, 2010 at 7:30 p.m. The evening will feature a lecture and performance on Green’s topic, which is the “Development of Jewish Art Music.”
The history of the Jewish people is intertwined with the history of their music. Clarinetist Paul Green and pianist Jennifer will explore the fascinating topic of Jewish music and the Jewish musical identity. It will span the entire gamut of Jewish history, from ancient biblical times to the present day.
Paul Green’s love affair with the clarinet began when he was only eight years old and his passion for music has led him around the world, thrilling audiences in his path. Accomplished at age 13, he was recommended to Leonard Bernstein by Stanley Drucker, the First Clarinetist of the New York Philharmonic. In 1966, Green won the Young Concert Artists International Auditions and attended Yale University, and performed as principal clarinetist with the New Haven Symphony Orchestra. He graduated Yale with a BA in Theory and Composition in 1970 and continued his studies at Juilliard, receiving an MS degree in performance in 1972.
He soloed and performed chamber music and then began considering other career possibilities. Offered the co-principal clarinet position of the Jerusalem Symphony Orchestra, he instead opted to attend Brooklyn Law School, graduating cum laude in 1978. In 1985, after several years at prominent New York law firms, Green joined the faculty of Brooklyn Law School.
In 1990, he returned full time to music and played a solo recital at Merkin Concert Hall in New York, which garnered a rave review in The New York Times. Since then, Paul Green has performed in dozens of recitals and festivals throughout the world.
Presently, Green is a member of the faculties of Florida Atlantic University in Boca Raton, and Florida International University in Miami, where he teaches clarinet performance and chamber music. He is the founder and Director of Klezmer East, an ensemble in residence at Florida Atlantic University, a founding member of the Florida Woodwind Quintet, also in residence at Florida Atlantic University, and a member of the Nodus Ensemble, a contemporary music group in residence at Florida International University. He is also the Principal Clarinetist of the Miami City Ballet Orchestra, the Boca Raton Philharmonic Symphony Orchestra and the Atlantic Classical Orchestra.
