On April 22, 2017, the Deering Estate presents Platform 450, a transdisciplinary initiative and thought-provoking exhibition of site-specific works by more than two dozen notable contemporary artists that use the 450 acres of the site for interaction and inspiration.
Part of the annual Deering Spring Contemporary, Platform 450 offers visitors an opportunity to experience artworks converging on the exploration of scientific data and new technologies as they relate to the natural and historic site. Prior to the opening, from 2:00 pm – 4:00 pm at the Deering Estate Visitor Center, we invite the public to the Platform 450 Dynamic Dialog, an interactive arts discussion. The opening of the exhibition from 3:30-10:00 p.m. inside the homes and historic grounds is free and open to the public, and features: a Curator and Artist-Led Tour, Site-Specific Performances of Estate by this season’s Playwrights in Residence from the Miami-Dade County Playwright Development Program, and a family-friendly scavenger hunt.

Sound Guide: Artists duo Archival Feedback (Emile Milgrim + T. Wheeler Castillo)
Sound Guide is an enhanced digital map that guides the audience through the acoustic landscape of Deering Estate’s endemic ecosystems. Archival Feedback is engaged in various critical dialogues of the moment. They approach the environment as a studio, using their ears and technology to guide questions and intentions through primarily sound-based work in the field.
Tangled: Design Collective Home Eleven (Nelly Bonilla + Oscar Luna)
An interactive installation and web-like environment of plastic materials, Tangled brings attention to the effects that man-made materials have on both wildlife and water ecosystems. In the short time since its founding, Home Eleven has participated in events that make a statement, from work on immigration through Art in Amnesty to broadening minds on the possibilities of making and creating at the Miami Maker Fair Pavilion.
5 Actions to stop Sea Level Rise: Artist Xavier Cortada
This performance, created during an artist residency at the Rising Seas Confab 2015, Rauschenberg Studio, Captiva, Florida, ironically comments on the lack of action being taken in the state of Florida to address the causes of climate disruption. Xavier Cortada,
a Cuban American artist, has created art installations around the world to generate awareness about global climate change.
MIAMI 2120: Artist Ian Honoré
MIAMI 2120, a virtual environment, could be thought of as a data-visualization of the late Miami geologist Peter Harlem’s sea-level rise projection maps, well-known in climate change literature. Synthesizing GIS data and architecture models with Harlem’s work, this piece is a precise rendering of our urban landscape sunken into an archipelago. An interactive artwork, viewers can adjust an avatar’s speed to jet across town or jump over neighborhoods, granting a bird’s eye view of textured Google Maps. Ian Honoré is a Chilean-American new media artist born and raised in Miami, Florida.
Platform 450 will remain on display through June 26, 2017, 10:00 a.m.-4:00 p.m., and is free with Estate admission.
