Coral Gables Museum presents “Italy in Motion”

Opening reception: March 8, 2013.
From March 8 through June 23, 2013.

In partnership with the 2013 Year of Italian Culture, the Coral Gables Museum has several exhibitions and events planned including a beautiful new exhibit, Italy in Motion, which features Italian designed modes of transportation including Ferraris, Vespas, Fiats, Ducatis and custom made bicycles.

The 2013 Year of Italian Culture is a project launched by Giulio Terzi di Sant’Agata, Italy’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, under the sponsorship of the President of the Italian Republic, Giorgio Napolitano. This program will showcase the best of Italian arts and culture in some 70 United States cultural institutions across America in more than 40 major cities, including Boston, Chicago, Detroit, Houston, Los Angeles, Miami, New York, Philadelphia, San Francisco, and Washington D.C. The initiative will highlight research, discovery, and innovation in Italian culture and identity, focusing on art, music, theater, cinema, literature, science, design, fashion, and cuisine.

The twentieth and twenty-first centuries have seen immense advancements in human mobility and a corresponding development in various modes of transportation. The Italian contributions to this evolution demonstrate how the country’s design legacies and cultural identity are intertwined. Italy in Motion explores the contributions of various Italian companies, examining how they have historically and recently promoted themselves at home as well as to an American audience.
Curator, Miamian Chloe Chelz, has procured numerous images and support materials to complete the exhibition.  In addition, the museum is hosting the UNESCO Italian World Heritage Sites photography exhibit and two exhibits featuring Italian architecture curated by University of Miami professor, Carmen Guerrero.

Italy in Motion opens on March 8, 2013 with an Italian wine and food reception and a performance by Florida Grand Opera’s Young Artist Studio, recognized worldwide as one of the leading operatic training programs in the United States. The talented artists will perform selections from Giuseppe Verdi’s La traviata and other Italian works as part of an hour long recital led by Roberto Berrocal, Principal Coach of the Young Artist Program. Tickets are $30 and are available for sale by calling the Museum at 305.603.8067.
