City of Borders at the Wolfsonian-FIU

March 11, 2012. 3:00 p.m.

The Wolfsonian Museum-FIU will be screening the documentary City of Borders, (U.S., Yun Suh, 2009, color, DVD, 66 min.) as part of the series Renewing Our Faith: InterFaithOut on March 11th at 3:00 p.m.

In the heart of Jerusalem stands an unusual symbol of unity that defies generations of segregation, violence and prejudice: a gay bar called Shushan. City of Borders goes inside the vibrant community at the only gay bar in Jerusalem where people of opposing nationalities, religions and sexual orientations create a sanctuary among people typically viewed as each other’s “enemy.”

The documentary intimately portrays the daily lives of the Israeli bar owner and four Israeli and Palestinian patrons as they navigate the minefield of politics, religion and discrimination to live and love openly. Set against the construction of the separation wall between Israel and the Palestinian territories and the struggle for a gay pride parade in Jerusalem, these five inter-woven stories reveal the contradictions and complexities in the struggle for acceptance. Co-presented with SAVE Dade’s InterFaithOUT Committee. Free admission to film and reception.
