Summer 2011.
Primary Flight has recently partnered up with the Cisneros Fontanals Art Foundation to create a block-sized mural by a Miami-based artist from Latin America at the non-profit organization’s CIFO Art Space.
Slated for completion in September 2011 to inaugurate CIFO’s 6th cycle of the Grants and Commissions Program Exhibition, the collaboration also supports Fund-A-Project – the organization’s micro-finance initiative currently being adopted by Primary Flight.
“Primary Flight was conceived four years ago because a few local artists wanted to show their work during Art Basel and took matters into their own hands,” said Books IIII Bischof, PF founder and curator. “We chose the streets as our canvas because we couldn’t wait on galleries to give us a shot, and wanted to create a sense of entrepreneurship amongst artists and within the industry. As a collective committed to maintaining our artistic integrity, micro-financing allows us to rally financial and moral support for our message as it is – inherently intuitive and raw.”
A trend that gained mainstream momentum during the 1970s, this finance model reflects a balance between philanthropy and traditional business practice. As Primary Flight looks to plant roots in downtown Miami – an emerging hub of arts and culture, and the new Miami center – the CIFO mural will be the first in a series of long-term, public art development projects.
Established in 2002 by Ella Fontanals-Ciscneros and her family, CIFO fosters cultural and educational exchange within the visual arts community. With the Grants and Commissions program created in support of emerging and mid-career contemporary artists from Latin America, and Foundation-initiated support for other arts and cultural projects, CIFO and PF share a common vision of community building and social enterprise.
