Celebrate Urban Design

May 17th and 18th, 2006Broward County Commission’s Cultural Division continues its celebrations for the 30th anniversary of Broward County’s Public Art and Design Program during 2006, with its next, two-part-lecture program: Sustainable Urban Design, Definitions and Delivery, featuring Dr. Matthew Carmona, Head of the Bartlett School of Planning at the University College in London. The lectures are to be presented on May 17th and 18th, 2006 in the cities of Lauderdale Lakes and Sunrise, respectively. Dr. Matthew Carmona, professor of Planning and Urban Design, and widely published architect and planner will discuss how the delivery of sustainable development can be joined with “quality” through thoughtful design policy, and provide frameworks for action plans that can improve the built and natural environments. With the issues surrounding the future of housing, redevelopment and growth, Dr. Carmona’s talk will be valuable for Broward County’s civic and business leaders, citizens, and students. Urban Design is now widely recognized, and encompasses the disciplines of urban geography, sociology, public administration, cultural studies, environmental management, conservation and urban regeneration. The May 17th lecture will be held at the City of Lauderdale Lakes, Commission Chambers, Lauderdale Lakes Municipal Complex, 4300 NW 36th Street at 6:00 pm. The May 18th lecture will convene in conjunction with Broward County’s County Cultural Forum in the Sunrise Civic Center Theater, 10610 W. Oakland Park Blvd at 9:00 am.
