From January 30 through February 23, 2014. Opening reception: January 30, 2014, 6:00-10:00 pm
In his large and small paintings, as well as a series of etchings, Fragoso reveals, “the irrational, unconscious, and primitive human behaviors that ignite passion, violence and desire.” He describes his process as spontaneous, working directly without any preparatory drawings. The artist employs rich colors and highly textured surfaces, which layer brick-like patterns and active marks over and under the drawings of human and animal figures. Using varied papers, some glued to natural Papyrus fiber, Fragoso’s works convey fable-like narratives, and the ambivalent bonds that connect humans and animals living together in Nature.
Born in Rio de Janeiro in 1954, Fragoso presently resides in New York. Although he took private art classes as a youth, and studied lithography and etching later on, Fragoso is essentially self-taught. He has developed both a deep connection to the history of painting and a method of working that combines sensitive drawing with materially expressive painting techniques.
Fragoso has exhibited his work at Kathleen Cullen Fine Arts in New York, at Books & Books, Coral Gables, Galeria Claudio Gil Studio de Arte and Gallery of the Brazil-United States Institute, both in Rio de Janeiro. The latter show was named “Best Exhibition of 1986,” and included a travel prize to the Tamarind Institute in Albuquerque, NM and New York. Recent solo exhibitions include University of Wisconsin in Madison, WI and Hartwick College in Oneonta, NY. Group exhibitions include those at the Museum of Modern Art, Ministerio da Educacao, and the National Foundation for the Arts in Rio de Janeiro, and the Jason mccoy Gallery in New York, NY.
