Other People’s Stuff. From Mar 18th through Apr 7th, 2010.

altArtists in the exhibition “Other People’s Stuff”, curated by Harumi Abe, the Fine Arts Gallery Director, derived their inspiration through found personal belongings, objects that originally they or their relatives owned and some other items that belonged to strangers. Coming from the starting point of “What happens to the stuff after the owner has moved on?” each artist answered the question in different ways through the respective media chosen. This exhibit features works of artists Duane Brant, Jules Lusson, Hugo Moro, Abner Nolan and Kerry Philips. This show will include site-specific sculpture installation, drawing, photography installation, collage and ongoing performance.

Duane Brant will present his “Saw Organ”, an interactive acoustical sound machine. Brant was born in Montana. After graduating in the University of Wyoming, he taught in the public school system for 20 years. He now teaches at Barry University and works in Hollywood, FL.

Jules Lusson is part of a family that has a long history in Florida, and her work is inspired by the natural world that surrounds her. She will display works from “The Miami Series” created with old images by famed Miami photographer Carl Walden and her drawings.

Hugo Moro is a Cuban born artist. After he immigrated to the United States, he lived and attended school in New York. He has been living in Florida for a while and was recently invited by the Collateral Exhibitions Committee to the IX Havana Biennial and the Ghetto Biennale, Port-au-Prince, Haiti.

San Francisco’s based artist; Abner Nolan will exhibit a photo installation in collaboration with Duane Brant and his father’s photography archive and memoirs. Nolan teaches at California College of the Arts. He has received the Trillium Award and The MacDowell Colony Residence and published several books including is photography book American Negatives.

Kerry Philips will be showing a site-specific sculpture installation that contains collections of found objects. She inherited her collecting habits from her parents. Born and raised in Texas, Philips now lives and works in Miami.

Gaze by Sara Stites. From Jan 14th through Feb 3rd, 2010.

Gaze is an exhibition of drawing and sculpture by Miami artist Sara Stites. The work speaks to nature’s endless capacity for growth and recursion. Stites uses a playful mix of scale so that the viewer questions whether the view is into a miniscule world or one in outer space. The coexistence of big and small, detailed and smooth, intricate and simple is at work here.
