Kyus Philnesta turned a narrative poem into a book. One of the poems in her self-published poetry book (To the Heart of Things) birthed a novel (Because of Love) and Kyus is now working on a sequel novel as requested by her readers. Meet this dynamic young writer on Saturday, August 14th, 2010 from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. at the African-American Research Library and Cultural Center in Ft. Lauderdale.
Ms. Philnesta is a native and resident of Miami where she lives with her husband and family. She holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Criminal Justice and has worked in the criminal justice field for 23 years. Kyus has always enjoyed writing. There are two things Kyus wants to bring to light in her writings. First, she wants to focus on issues that change her protagonist’s life – issues such as rape, death, teenage pregnancy or serious illnesses. Her desire is to show how strong, solid relationships help people deal with these issues after being shattered by uncontrollable events.
Secondly, she wants to increase moral awareness in her readers. When her characters face a crisis beyond their control and must make a moral decision, do they allow what they have been taught to shape their decision, even if their heart is wrapped up in pain? Or do they allow the pain or anger or other strong emotion to be the guiding factor in how the crisis is handled? She believes her debut novel, Because of Love, does both.
Kyus has a saying that reflects her love of reading and writing: “The only thing better than being swept away with a great book is writing one!” Kyus Philnesta is the owner of Swept Away Books, LLC; a book resource that promotes and sells her books. Ms. Philnesta reaches out to her community by doing public speaking for “at risk” youth groups, imploring the importance of words and the essence of writing.
