Black Square Gallery opens its doors in 2010 to present world art processes and trends to modern viewers. The goal is to interact with visitors, clients and represented artists, complementing the gallery exhibitions and international art fairs, with creative discussions, lectures and master classes with the participation of curators and artists.
Exhibitions of paintings and sculptures are alternated with the expositions of video art, photography and installations. A group of selected and accomplished artists, former participants of the Venice Biennale and other significant art events, as well as talented and promising young artists from different countries, and continents (the U.S., Ukraine, France, Russia, Switzerland etc.) will be shown to visitors and collectors. The gallery’s name comes from the picture by avant-gardism and supremacist Kazimir Malevich’s (1879, Kiev – 1935, Leningrad) “Black Square” (1915), which revolutionized art and largely determined the course of its future development. “Black Square” became one of the first steps of transition to conceptual art, and today it is a symbol of art complex, philosophical, elitist and innovation.
The first exhibition is of contemporary photography by Anton Solomoukha, French artist (originally Ukrainian) who tries to find the new meaning and symbols in his interpretations of well-known masterpieces. The hero of the series is Little Red Riding Hood, who travels through the pictures by Caravaggio, Ingres, Mantegna, Botticelli, Manet, Delacroix and dreams to see herself at the place of beautiful heroines from the famous canvases. The photographer used a combination of three ideas: a girl who becomes a woman, famous masterpieces, and an actual modern story. Everything is mixed in Anton Solomoukha’s photographical world with a combination of mystery, metamorphoses, plays, guesses, erotic secret meanings in the positions of figures and combinations of different things.
