Opening Reception: March 27, 2014, 6:00pm – 8:00pm
Beyond The Rails explores the railroad industry through an examination of gender, class and regionalism. Objects including advertising ephemera, historical artifacts, photographs and art works will engage viewers with a visual experience and provoke a better understanding of the powerful role that rail travel played in society and industry in the late 19th and early 20th century.
The exhibition represents the final production of a yearlong Museum Studies course at the Wolfsonian FIU/ Downtown. The course places students in an environment that fosters professional development with hands on experience curating art exhibitions and attending lectures delivered by museum and collection industry experts. The Museum Studies course and the exhibition Beyond The Rails: Notes on Trains, Travel and Society is made possible by the support of the Mitchell Wolfson Sr. Foundation.
This exhibition is presented in partnership between MDC Museum of Art + Design, Mitchell Wolfson Jr. Study Centre, Wolfsonian-FIU, Miami Dade College and New World School of the Arts.
