Three masterful genre-benders, Béla Fleck, Zakir Hussain and Edgar Meyer are the leading virtuosos on their respective instruments, banjo, tabla and double bass. They move with ease among the worlds of rock, jazz, classical, bluegrass and world music. The three musicians will perform together from their innovative collaboration at the Gusman Theater in Miami on Sunday, October 18th, presented by The Rhythm Foundation.
Fleck, Hussain and Meyer share an unprecedented array of projects and pairings among them that touch every geographical and stylistic corner of the musical world. The trio will also release a recording in Fall 2009 featuring music performed on the tour alongside their innovative Triple Concerto for Banjo, Tabla and Double Bass.
Béla Fleck has been called the premiere banjo player in the world and has virtually reinvented the image and the sound of the banjo through a remarkable performing and recording career that has taken him all over the musical map. At home equally in the great classical halls and concert arenas of the world, Béla has won eight Grammy Awards and has been nominated in more different categories than anyone in Grammy history. Originally known for his innovative jazz and jam influenced bluegrass band The Flecktones, he also has a rich solo career. Some recent projects include the Tales from the Acoustic Planet series which all him to collaborate with leading African musicians.
Zakir Hussain is a classical tabla virtuoso of the highest order. His consistently brilliant and exciting performances have established him globally as an international phenomenon and one of Indian music’s most renowned cultural ambassadors. The foremost disciple of his father, the legendary Ustad Allarakha, Zakir was a child prodigy who began his professional career at the age of twelve and was already touring internationally with great success by the age of eighteen. He has won countless awards from in India, Europe and the US. He is also a composer, having written music for many film scores and for the opening ceremonies of the 1996 Summer Olympics in Atlanta. Zakir’s collaborative work has found him performing with Shakti (with John McLaughlin), Tabla Beat Science (the world music “supergroup” he co-founded with Bill Laswell), Planet Drum (with Mickey Hart) and many others.
Edgar Meyer is prominently established as a unique and masterful instrumentalist and has an active career as both a performer and a composer. Hailed by the New Yorker as “…the most remarkable virtuoso in the relatively unchronicled history of his instrument,” Mr. Meyer’s unparalleled technique and musicianship in combination with his gift for composition have brought him to the fore, where he is appreciated by a vast, varied audience. He was awarded a prestigious MacArthur Award in 2002 as well as three career Grammys to date.
