October 2011.

The Bass Museum of Art welcomed Roger Ward, Ph.D. as Adjunct Curator of Collections on Octpber 1, 2011. Under the direction of Executive Director and Chief Curator Silvia Karman Cubiña, the Bass Museum’s curatorial program continues to be energized by a diversity of talent and ideas.

“The Bass Museum’s new mission is to explore connections between its historical collections and contemporary art,” Cubiña says. “Our Curatorial team, Adjunct Curator Steve Holmes, Knight Curatorial Fellow Kristin Korolowicz and I, look forward to working with Dr. Ward in seeking creative ways of pursuing these links. Dr. Ward is a very respected voice in the field of European art, and the Bass Museum is very fortunate to welcome him into our team.”

Ward, in turn, expressed his admiration for Cubiña’s dynamic leadership of the museum, observing that “She is to be hugely congratulated for recognizing the Bass Museum’s historical collection as an irreplaceable asset, which deserves to be properly studied, preserved and displayed in meaningful ways.  I am delighted to have this opportunity to lend my experience and expertise to that effort.”

Internationally acknowledged as a scholar of Italian Renaissance and Baroque art, Dr. Ward’s area of special interest and the subject of many of his publications is Florentine and Roman art of the mid-16th century. He has supervised numerous ambitious campaigns of conservation, research and publication, as well as of architectural renovation and the reinstallation of collections. He has also organized many special exhibitions, ranging in subject matter from Albrecht Dürer to Henri Matisse, and he is widely known as an astute connoisseur of Old Master paintings, sculptures and drawings.

Ward received his doctorate from the prestigious Courtauld Institute of Art at the University of London, where he studied as a Marshall Scholar, Kress Scholar and Chester Dale Fellow from 1976 to 1982. Since then he has worked as Curator of European Art at Kansas City’s renowned Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art (1982 to 2001) and as Chief Curator and Curator of European Art at the Norton Museum of Art in West Palm Beach (2001 to 2011). In addition, he served as that institution’s Interim Director for nine months from 2009 to 2010.

Ward joins the recently appointed Korolowicz and Holmes in promoting curatorial dialogue in Miami and abroad.
