Sunday, April 13, 2014 from 2:30pm to 5:30pm
Mendez leads an unconventional afternoon tour in conjunction with BFI exhibition and Miami Light Project’s Here & Now Festival 2014. On April 13, artist Ana Mendez, in collaboration with Samantha Kruse, will guide us through a roving performance installation at a secret location, originating at Bas Fisher Invitational. This installment of WEIRD MIAMI will be a look into the future culture of the human race and its return to a more integrated relationship with the natural cycles and forces of nature. Experience these “creature humans” in captivity and witness a wild display of nesting and foraging.
The bus tour will include an afternoon swim with the artists, so bring your bathing suits! This performance is in conjunction with Ana Mendez’s exhibition Fortress at BFI and her commissioned performance presented at Miami Light Project’s Here & Now Festival 2014.
Ana Mendez, born in Miami and a graduate from the University of Illinois, is a professional dancer and performance artist. She is cofounder of the artist collective, Psychic Youth with artist Federico Nessi that began in 2008. She has been commissioned by the Adrienne Arsht Center through Miami Light Project’s Here & Now Festival, the de la Cruz Collection, Miami Art Museum, MOCA North Miami and the Bass Museum for her projects. In 2013, Mendez was awarded artist fellow for the Artist in Residence in the Everglades program. She has also performed for local directors and choreographers such as Natasha Tsakos, Stephanie Ansin, Rosie Herrera, Ray Sullivan, Octavio Campos and Giovanni Luquini. She is a frequent performer for Circ X cabaret. Mendez is currently a visiting performance artist at Spinello Projects.
BFI is an artist-run space dedicated to creativity, experimentation, and discourse in contemporary art. Central to BFI is WEIRD MIAMI, a project that began with a special summer group show and grew from that success into the core of our programming. WEIRD MIAMI explores the eccentricities that make Miami special through art exhibitions and artist-led bus tours throughout Miami-Dade County. The project received stellar press and reviews from local online blogs, newspapers, and magazines such as The New York Times, Frieze, The Miami Herald, The Biscayne Times, and Miami New Times.
