Bakehouse Art Complex 20th Anniversary

From April 7th through May 29th, 2006In celebration of its 20th Anniversary, the Bakehouse Art Complex, Wynwood’s Art Pioneer, is bringing to the South Florida community an exhibition recounting the history of visual arts in Miami prior to the waves of migration after the 1980’s, not just from Cuba, but from Central and South America, Haiti, Europe and the northern United States. This comprehensive exhibit represents in addition to the visual arts, the myriad of performance arts that existed, and thrilled audiences of those early years in this cities development. More than fifty Miami visual artists, who, prior to 1980, had already received recognition will have works from that early period displayed in the exhibition. Also represented, will be Dorothy Berenson Blau and Gloria Luria, two of the outstanding gallery owners of that period, as well as Barbara Gillman Gallery and Virginia Miller Gallery, both of which continue to survive the ‘test of time’ under the incredible direction of their namesakes. The documentation of the artists they each presented to local audiences represents many of the most heralded names in the arts today. Other visual arts facilities participating include the Fairchild Tropical Botanic Garden and the Lowe Art Museum. Additionally, there will be a plethora of information documenting the early years of theater from Coconut Grove Playhouse, the University of Miami Ring Theater, and Tigertail Productions, and musical performance from the Florida Grand Opera, the University of Miami Symphony, the Florida Philharmonic, and the Concert Association of America.
