The Arts Ballet Theatre of Florida opens a new season of performances in October, with a Tribute to Sergei Diaghilev, the Russian art critic, patron and founder of the Ballets Russes. This Tribute includes three pieces related to his contribution to the Ballet: The Rite of Spring, Le Spectre de la Rose and Petrouchka.
Artistic director, ballet master and choreographer of Arts Ballet Theatre of Florida, Vladimir Issaev, in a continuous effort to bring to South Florida the most iconic ballets of the Russian repertoire, brings his new version of Stravinsky’s The Rite of Spring. This controversial piece commissioned by Diaghilev, is celebrating its 100th anniversary and will be performed by the magnificent dancers of Arts Ballet Theatre of Florida.
The program also includes Le Spectre de la Rose, a beautiful short ballet about a young woman who dreams of dancing with the spirit of a souvenir rose from her first ball, based on a poem by Théophile Gautier, and Petrouchka with music of Stravinsky and choreography by Issaev himself. The Ballet in one act is set in the middle of a Russian Fair and tells the story of three puppets: Petrouchka, the clown, the Ballerina and, the Moor.
The Second program, brings back a Holiday tradition: The Nutcracker, based on the tale of Ernest Hoffman with Tchaikovsky’s popular score and choreographed and directed by Vladimir Issaev. The Nutcracker features a team of professional dancers performing the principal roles, as well as a community cast made up of local character artists and children for the party scene. Not only is it the most popular ballet enjoyed by all audiences around the world during this time of the year but it also serves as an introduction to ballet for the very young audiences.
Following in March, Arts Ballet Theatre of Florida performs its gorgeous productions of Fairy Doll. Originally “Die Puppenfee” by composer Josef Bayer was one of the most successful productions in the late 19th century. Issaev’s recreation and revival of this ballet in two acts, was first premiered in 2009. The production counts on creative and imaginative costume designer Jorge Gallardo to make all dancers look like real dolls and the sets will be digitally enhanced by the magnificent projections created by DMD. This production has been of great success among audiences that are looking for an alternative to attend with their family to see a beautiful an enchanting ballet.
Closing the Season, Arts Ballet Theatre presents its traditional Spring Gala, featuring Shostakovich Suites and Pentimento. Shostakovich Suites is an exhilarating choreographic piece by Vladimir Issaev, inspired by the music of this Russian composer who was a revolutionary in contemporary composition while suffering the brutal despotism toward talented artists during Stalin’s era. Pentimento, created by choreographer Vicente Nebrada, includes excerpts from Johann Sebastian Bach’s Four Suites for Orchestra. The ballet is a bold, abstract work that is based on the art form of painting called pentimento. The artist changes his or her mind about the composition of his painting during the process, and then changes it. This ballet applies the same approach to dance: the concept for the dances and costumes change throughout the performance.
In addition to these main productions, Arts Ballet Theatre of Florida will continue its partnership with The Opera Atelier and will perform at other venues throughout South Florida. More to come on Arts Ballet Theater of Florida! Stay tuned!
