Art Deco Academy and Tour School

From Sep 20th through Oct 4th, 2008.  Miami Design Preservation League. Miami Arts Miami Design Preservation League (MDPL) conducts the Art Deco Academy and Tour School twice during the year – once in the spring and again in the fall. The Academy is geared to individuals who would like to know more about Art Deco, and also serves as a training program (Tour School) for individuals who would like to become volunteer guides, leading walking tours of the Art Deco District.

The curriculum, established by the Academy's founder and director Jeff Donnelly Ph.D., focuses on the history of the Art Deco District, its architecture, and the efforts by MDPL and others to preserve it. Miami Beach's Art Deco District was the nation's first twentieth-century historic district.

Graduating from the Academy requires completion of two days of educational sessions (September 20th and 27th), which include walking tours, the study of architectural styles and Miami Beach history, and guest lectures, featuring Michael Kinerk and Dennis Wilhelm and Mayor Matti Bower, former MDPL board member and currently Mayor of the City of Miami Beach. Tour School candidates need to attend a third session on October 4th, primarily devoted to student presentations of selected walking tour sites.
