Area Stage Company adds a charming, fishy fairy-tale to its already wildly successful Mainstage Season. The Coral Gables-based theatre will open Disney’s The Little Mermaid in January, presenting the well-known story as a seaside circus spectacular.
Following the immense success, and critical acclaim, of his Shrek The Musical and She Kills Monsters earlier this year, Giancarlo Rodaz will direct as well as design the set and lighting. Most of us know the Disney fairy-tale based on one of Hans Christian Anderson’s most enduring fables. The hauntingly beautiful love story centers on a little mermaid who dreams of being part of a world beyond her own. Known for reimagining and reworking classics, Rodaz will breathe new life into the family-friendly piece by utilizing traditional circus performance elements, including trapeze, silks, acrobatics, and puppetry.
The original production, nominated for two Tony Awards, opened on Broadway in 2007.
The stage version includes music by eight-time Academy Award winner, Alan Menken, lyrics by Howard Ashman and Glenn Slater, and a compelling book by Doug Wright. All the irresistibly catchy tunes from the film are there, including “Under the Sea,” “Kiss the Girl” and “Part of Your World.”
Experience Disney’s The Little Mermaid at Area Stage Company for all the laughs, wit, heart, and romance you expect from a Disney classic, brought to life in an entirely fresh way!
