The signing of a management agreement between the City of Miami Beach, as represented by its Mayor, Matti Herrera Bower, and Altos del Mar Sculpture Park, as represented by its CEO and President, Dr. Marlene Saile, J.D., will take place at Valentino Sul Mare, 7330 Ocean Terrace, Miami Beach. The City Commission of Miami Beach unanimously approved the management agreement on June 3, between the City of Miami Beach and Altos del Mar Sculpture Park, Inc., a Florida 501(c)(3) public charity (“ADMSP”).
“This is another great step to include art in the very fabric of Miami Beach,” said Mayor Matti Herrera Bower. “ADMSP represents a great opportunity for the North Beach community to become as well known a cultural destination as the South Beach community has been for some time. I am very happy that we were able to reach this step and look forward to opening day.”
ADMSP will establish the sculpture park at the current Altos del Mar Park site, owned by the City of Miami Beach and located east of Collins Avenue between 76th and 77th streets. Designed by ArquitectonicaGEO and planned by Beilinson Gomez Architects, P.A., with South Florida limestone geology, parkland and urban life in mind, it will be the first sculpture park of its kind in the world. ADMSP will feature changing exhibitions of sculpture from established artists of the 19th, 20th and 21st centuries in natural “exhibition rooms” – and feature community programming in the park lawn. The Park will be open year round and admission will be free to the public.
Signing the management agreement is a major achievement in the ADMSP project, which is now more than four years in progress. In early 2004, the idea of developing a sculpture park in Miami Beach was originated by long-term friends and business partners, art collector Peter Saile and art historian Gerrit Schulz-Bennewitz.
Dr. Marlene Saile, J.D., President and CEO of ADMSP, worked tirelessly with the legal department of the City of Miami Beach to negotiate the agreement. “All of us at ADMSP are very happy to have reached this goal in our development,” said Dr. Saile. “With the management agreement done, we are much closer to sharing this dream with the community. The expertise of our staff and our Board of Directors, which includes notable members of the art community Robert Miller and Dr. David Schaff, will ensure that the Park is opened according to plan, which is currently scheduled for November 2011.”
