In his solo exhibition, All Grown Up, Cuban-American
artist Richard Vergez explores and dissects the perception of
development: oscillating between the emotional, intellectual, and
physical spaces in which growth occurs.
While
creating this body of work, the artist posed the question: “What do you
want to be when you grow up?” In itself, the question exudes proverbial
innocence and then at once can be transformed into contemplation of
existentialist dread. The artist continues to play on classic surrealist
motifs, utilizing hand-cut collage technique as well as a contemporary
form of digital manipulation during the process to create ethereal, dark
and dreamlike sceneries. These mixed media narratives invoke a sense of
equivocal contemplation between the internal and external, between
development and accomplishment, as if to ask: “Are you being what you
want to be?”
All Grown Up will be on view until October 27th, 2019.
