Don Voisine and Pachi Giustinian. From Feb 10 through Mar 30, 2012.
True to its goal of expanding the relationship and mutual exchange of globalized contemporary art, Alejandra von Hartz Gallery is presenting two solo exhibitions that bring together two artists who approach abstract painting from different perspectives.
Don Voisine. 2008 – 2011
Don Voisine’ reductive and “hard edged” paintings are informed by Architecture, in his own words: “a language of space that delineates boundaries, exposes points of access, exit or entry, and enables the user to interact with the structure of a defined space.”
Years ago, Voisine began working with imagery derived from floor plans of the places he lived or worked in. Over time, the paintings became more and more geometrically structured and less about a specific place. While taking into consideration ideas related to architecture, the pieces remain firmly two-dimensional.
The work evolved slowly through the repeated explorations of variations and forms. Voisine works continually on a number of paintings at once with ideas feeding the individual works in a long slow back and forth, a give-and-take that isn’t always linear.
Although his earlier paintings are about limits, restrictions, and controlled accesses; in more recent work, he tries to counter his own expectations, juxtaposing unlike elements to create an active visual field. Compositional elements: space, light, form, and in particular color, are essentials in his works, “combining with the perception of the viewer to create an individual and particular experience.”
Voisine has been exhibiting his work nationally and internationally for over three decades. Recent shows and activities include: American Abstract Artists International, 75th Anniversary 1936-2011, The Herbert F. Johnson Museum at Cornell University, the American Academy of Arts and Letters Invitational in New York, and The Portland Museum of Art Biennial in Maine, parisCONCRET, Paris, France (2012), FutureShock OneTwo, dr. julius | ap, Berlin, Germany (catalogue available), (2012), Dana Bell / Alasdair Duncan / Don Voisine, Theodore: Art, Brooklyn, NY (2012).
His works are included in many institutional collections, amongst them the Cincinnati Art Museum, Cincinnati, OH, the National Academy Museum, New York, NY, Neuberger Berman, New York, NY and most recently entered in the Corcoran Gallery of Art , Washington, DC.
Voisine has received awards from Hassam, Speicher Betts and Symonds Fund Purchase Award, American Academy of Arts and Letters, New York (2011); the Portland Museum of Art Biennial Purchase Prize, ME (2011), the Henry Ward Ranger Fund Purchase Award, National Academy Museum, New York (2008), and the Artist’s Fellowship, New York Foundation for the Arts (2006), just to mention some. His work has been reviewed in Art Ltd. Magazine, Artnews, Art in America, The Brooklyn Rail, Joanne Mattera Art Blog, The New York Sun, The New York Times, and many other publications.
Since 2004 he is the president of the American Abstract Artists, which is celebrating its 75th anniversary, and in 2010 was elected National Academician, National Academy of Design, New York. He lives and works in NYC.
Pachi Giustinian. Things in the Air
Pachi Giustinian conceptual practice is rooted in constructing new “painting” methods, using the inherent qualities of paint, – specifically chromatic and spatial orientation.
Giustinian manipulates the traditional “window” of the painted surface to correspond with her own filtration of the diverse visual stimuli that make up our experiential knowledge of the world. She abandons the surface and emphasizes the material qualities of paint itself. She allows us to delve into the sensory / sensual aspect of our experiences of objects, the architectures, and the spaces that define our existence.
Through the exploration of various non-traditional approaches to creating a new space, she is concerned with paint’s physical properties and its potential as a tool in sculpture. As paint separates itself from its conventional supports, it is liberated and corresponds freely with the way that light and color are modulated by our ever changing, subjective perception of things-in-the-world.
Giustinian holds a 2005 BFA in Visual Arts specialized in Painting from the I.U.N.A (Instituto Universitario Nacional del Arte), Buenos Aires, Argentina. She participated at “Watch the stars and from them learn”, solo show at Spinello Gallery, Miami, in 2010, and was a 2010/2011 resident at Legal Art – Live/Working residence program, Miami, FL.
She currently lives and works in Miami, Florida. The works exhibited in her first solo show at the gallery, were produced during a year-long artist residency in Miami in 2011.
