African-American Research Library and Cultural Center

Two Exhibitions. From Jan 9th through 31st, 2010.

The African-American Research Library and Cultural Center is currently presenting two exhibitions. The first exhibit in AARLCC’s gallery features the African World Artists Collective of South Florida who present their vision of “Memories,” a collection of new visual art by local artists dedicated to the memory of Charles Mills, a founding member of the African World Artists Collective (AWAC) and a longtime friend of AARLCC. The mission of the AWAC is to foster awareness in the community of the rich heritage, contributions and talents of artists of African descent. The exhibit will be on display through the month.

The second exhibit in the gallery features the Obama Peace Prize Mural, composed of 700 original paintings. A dynamic Vietnamese-born artist known as Huong, along with 10 guest artists, created the mural in recognition of President Obama receiving the Nobel Peace Prize. The mural made its debut at Broward County’s Main Library last month and is now on the second stop of a nationwide library tour.

The Peace Mural speaks eloquently through the original painted canvases about Obama and the remaking of America through the eyes of Huong, a woman who fled Vietnam with her son in 1975. Huong was in Washington, D.C. on Inauguration Day. “These panels reflect what I saw and felt on that day and what I have been seeing and hearing in the months since,” she said.
