The Playground Theatre From Apr 11th through Apr 15th, 2007The Playground Theatre presents the play A Very Old Man with Enormous Wings at the Shores Performing Arts Theater located at 9806 NE 2nd Ave in Miami Shores. Inspired by the Gabriel Garcia Marquez’s short story, this play was adapted for the stage by Pulitzer Price winner Nilo Cruz. The story explores the powerful faith and imagination of children, what a father will do to support his family, and the kind of magic that exists in everyday life. One night in a town that was forgotten in time, somewhere close to the Caribbean Sea, the moon, descends through the sky to ride her blue bicycle through the streets. Her magnetism draws gypsies and hurricanes, clouds of miracles, unan- prayers, and a mysterious creature who falls from the sky – a very old man with enormous wings. Although Fefé and Momó, the two children who find him, are afraid at first, when they look into his eyes, they know he means them no harm. He cannot speak, yet they understand him. They believe he is an angel. When the other villagers discover the old man, he becomes a symbol of what they want or need him to be – he is at once an angel and a freak, an answer to prayers and a moneymaking sideshow. Born in Matanzas, Cuba in 1960, Nilo Cruz immigrated to Miami in 1970 and received an M.F.A. in Playwriting from Brown University in 1994. In 2003, he became the first Latino to receive the Pulitzer Prize in Drama, awarded for his play Anna in the Tropics. Cruz’s other plays include Hortensia and the Museum of Dreams, Dancing on Her Knees, Night Train to Bolina, and Two Sisters and a Piano. Theatres that have staged Cruz’s work: New York’s Public Theater, New York Theatre Workshop, South Coast Repertory, Florida Stage, New Theatre, Coconut Grove Playhouse, and Children’s Theatre of Minneapolis.
