Your Forest For My Trees: Alex Gingrow and Michael Scoggins At Diana Lowenstein Gallery

From April 12, 2014 through May 2014
Opening Reception: Saturday, April 12 from 6:00pm to 9:00pm

The Diana Lowenstein Gallery is pleased to announce Your Forest For My Trees: two solo exhibitions from Alex Gingrow and Michael Scoggins.

Alex Gingrow: Gingrow’s practice revolves around text-based paintings and drawings that are at turns witty, sardonic, poetic, self-deprecating and revealing. She reappropriates easily recognizable objects such as gallery provenance stickers or a daily desk calendar with her own writing to create narratives that range from scathing critiques of the art world to personal tales of struggle, achievement, and daily minutia. In Your Forest for My Trees, Gingrow will exhibit the first month in an ongoing series of her newest body of work, The “This Disposable Day” Desk Calendar.
Gingrow has also created a series of letterpress print, hand-bound books that will accompany this and future exhibitions of the calendar series as a means of capturing the literary aspects of her daily writing.

Michael Scoggins (From the artist): “A page out of a notebook, with its blue lines and spiral bound edges, is a familiar image. This is my primary vehicle in utilizing a connection with the viewer. The paper is enlarged to give this common object a sense of importance and to create a new perspective. The text and images placed upon the large page deal with the influences of American culture and how it has shaped my life. The paper is torn, crumpled and folded to implicate a tangible history and to suggest the creation of an object, thus expanding the definition of traditional drawing.”
