Pan American Art Projects is very pleased to announce our next exhibition featuring the work of Edouard Duval-Carrié. The show is a comprehensive survey of his work, including colorful older pieces for which he is well-known, as well as a selection of new works. His work is a compendium of universal references to art history and literature, but also of regional elements from his country such as religion and folklore. His commentaries on political and social issues emerge from the brilliant images in which legends and daily life are entwined. These are good examples of Magic Realism, in which it is almost impossible to separate fact from fantasy.
The artist is portraying a “Marvelous Reality”, as Cuban writer Alejo Carpentier defined it in the prologue for his book The Kingdom of this World, a story about Haiti that has been a strong influence on Duval-Carrié. He brings into his work the nearly fantastic world of his country, in images that could be seen as illustrations of myths and legends. However, many of them become clear critiques of the social and political order in Haitian society. He also presents important aspects of Haitian history, including heroes and relevant figures. He comments on the importance of the past on Haitian contemporary society from a historic viewpoint, including the issue of slavery and its weight in the development of the present. He also touches on neuralgic aspects of present Haitian life such as migration and its effects on the country.
On March13th the Perez Art Museum Miami (PAMM) will open Edouard Duval-Carrié: Imagined Landscapes, also a solo exhibition of the artist. The pieces in this show were made during the past year and display the formal and conceptual direction that his work is taking. In this exhibition he will present primarily large scale resin paintings and sculptures. These new pieces reference nineteen-century landscape paintings that depict Florida and the Caribbean. Duval-Carrié uses these images to comment on the presence of colonial structures in contemporary societies in the Caribbean. His palette shows ostensible changes, opting for a dark spectrum of colors and silver glitter instead of the usual brilliant tones of the past.
Duval-Carrié was born in Port-au-Prince, Haiti, in 1954. He was educated at the University of Loyola Montreal, Quebec, in Canada; and at the Ecole Nationale Superieure des Beaux Arts, Paris in France. In 1992 he moved to Miami, Florida, where he currently lives and works.
