Through September 21, 2013.
The Miami Dade College (MDC) Museum of Art + Design will present A Poetic Reality: Magical Realism of the CINTAS Fellows Collection. Stewards of the collection since 2011, the Museum is located within the College’s historic Freedom Tower and it is free and open to the public Wednesday to Sunday, from noon to 5:00 p.m.
Featuring artworks by 10 artists, including José Mijares and Ernesto de la Vega Pujol, and compositions by CINTAS music composition fellows Tania Leon and Orlando Jacinto Garcia, the exhibition explores the theoretical structure of Magical Realism; a mid-20th century Latin American literary movement. Curated by the MDC Museum of Art + Design Curatorial Intern – Natalie Fulgencio Perez, the exhibition explores concepts of race, religion and culture through the use of fantastical elements in everyday situations. The exhibition and artists selected are not concerned with taking a political or social position but, through the arrangement of forms; redefine the ordinary with extraordinary creating elements that allow a variety of arguments to surface.
“The depth and magnitude of artists and artworks within the prestigious CINTAS Foundation Fellows Collection continues to exemplify the contributions and impact that artists of Cuban descent have made over the past 50 years,” said Jeremy Mikolajczak, executive director of the MDC Museum & Galleries of Art + Design. He added: “The continuous rotations and exhibitions further the interpretation and reinterpretation of the collection, engaging audiences in new ways of seeing and experiencing the strength and verisimilitude of the work by the CINTAS Fellows.”
