Join Leica Store Miami in the Leica Lounge invites documentary photographer Vivianne Peckham. This Leica Lounge is coordinating with the Women in Focus festival weekend going on from July 24th – 28th. More events include a panel discussion, workshop with Maggie Steber, a brunch edition Leica Lounge and Photo-Slam.
Currently living in Washington, DC, Vivianne was born in Belgium and has lived in Algeria and eight US states, but her most fond memories are from her childhood years in the hard light and saturated colors of the Sonoran Desert in Tucson, Arizona — quiet but full of life, and where she really learned to be still and to observe. Art history studies at Wellesley College led her to museum internships at Harvard, MIT, and the Boston Museum of Fine Arts, where Vivianne worked with an assortment of art and artifacts — from feathered headdresses to French silks and whaling prints. Still, she needed to be more directly productive, and the foundations learned in the desert were reinforced through graduate level studio design classes and years as a middle school teacher. Later, towards the end of a year-long recovery from illness, Vivianne picked up a camera as a tool to reoccupy space in the world from a perspective that was familiar and comfortable to her: that of the observer. Since then, she has occupied a variety of spaces with her Leica. Besides street photography, past projects include the National Zoo, the Loggerhead Marinelife Center, behind-the-scenes activity at the Washington International Horse Show and DC’s national celebrations. With the rise in political activism, she has also been busy documenting marches, rallies, and lobbying efforts on Capitol Hill.
