An impressive High School Senior Showcase culminates the 2013 visual arts program, featuring the work of 24 talented college-bound artists in the heart Wynwood. The works, representative of the various art disciplines emphasized in the visual arts program, encompass painting, drawing, sculpture, photography and installations. The exhibition takes place at the NWSA Artseen Gallery in Wynwood Arts District.

Among the exhibitors is Ariel Canino. Influenced by a recent trip to Cuba, Canino sculptures represent the current dilapidated state of the island. “He was very moved by his visit to Cuba,” said Susan Banks, professor of visual arts at NWSA. “Ariel’s strong connection with the people and his exposure to the architectural landscape gave him a clear vision of what he wanted to create.” Of Cuban descent, Ariel explained that he has always been intrigued by Cuba as a result of his parents stories, however, just this past summer he decided to take action by visiting his relatives still living there. After graduation Ariel plans to attend the University of Miami on an academic scholarship to pursue political science. He hopes to continue his artwork with an emphasis on social commentary.

Other must see works include Imani Nixon and Gail Jacque’s pieces. Both photography majors, these students’ works explore powerful subjects through various experimental mediums. Their expression of every-day situations revealed through the lens of their cameras has garnered them recognition by leading universities across the nation. This has led them to receive full scholarships and housing to Kansas City Institute, where they will both be attending this coming fall.

Jacques’ recent photography work, which was exhibited at the NWSA Rising Stars Showcase Exhibition, was acquired by the Cricket Taplin Collection and is now being showcased at the Sagamore Hotel in Miami Beach, alongside other renowned artists.

Maggy Cuesta, dean of visual arts at NWSA, confirmed that all graduating students have been accepted to renowned universities across the nation to continue their field of study, the majority of them with full scholarships – “In total, the high school senior class of 2013 has received more than $9 million in scholarship offers to attend the top arts universities in our nation and we’re still getting word that more offers will be extended to our students,” stated Cuesta. Some of the universities that will be claiming NWSA students include Cooper, MICA, Art Center, RISD, School of Visual Arts and Kansas City Institute among others.
