Florida Grand Opera. From Apr 26th through May 17th, 2008. 7:00 p.m.
Florida Grand Opera (FGO) continues its 2007-2008 season on April 26th at 7:00 p.m. with a revival of its 2000 production of George Frideric Handel’s Julius Caesar (Giulio Cesare in Egitto), featuring soprano Leah Partridge as Cleopatra. Ms. Partridge returns to FGO after her acclaimed performance as Amina in last season’s La sonnambula. The cast also includes John Gaston as Julius Caesar, Brian Asawa as Ptolemy, and Katherine Calcamuggio as Sesto. Gary Thor Wedow will conduct, and Mark Lamos, who directed the original production in 2000, returns to direct this revival, with sets designed by Paul Steinberg and costumes by Constance Hoffman.
Performances at Miami’s Ziff Ballet Opera House at the Adrienne Arsht Center for the Performing Arts of Miami-Dade County continue on April 30th, and May 3rd, 6th, and 9th, all at 8 p.m. and a 2 p.m. matinee performance on May 11th. The production then moves to the Broward Center for the Performing Arts in Fort Lauderdale for performances on May 15th and 17th at 8:00 p.m.
Julius Caesar is a tale of power and passion with grand themes of warfare, heroic action, and inner turmoil. Handel’s sumptuous score and epic tale define the Baroque Opera tradition, and internationally, Julius Caesar is arguably the most frequently produced pre-Mozart opera.
