We have brought three of these artists back to the place where they reached maturity prior to 1990. Judith Page in Orlando, Deborah Schneider and Ward Shelley in Miami.
Deborah Schneider is a painter in the purest sense of the word. Her work is classically bound to the medium, beyond which there is no artifice, no illusion; only the challenge that the flat surface provides, locking herself into a very personal mission to activate it. Arriving in Miami in 1981 from New York, Schnieder quickly became a force within the South Florida art community, exhibiting her work at the Gloria Luria Gallery, the C.O.C.A. (among other venues) before returning to New York a decade later.
Judith Page mines her childhood for information (old diaries, early photographs, yearbooks, etc.) to create new and evolving alignments. Working from the wall and onto the floor, she reveals and deletes from a source visible only briefly, and consequently uses the viewer’s own early experiences to complete hers. From her studio in Williamsburg, Page is now a vital part of the New York “scene,” who has exhibited widely in New York and beyond. Page left Florida relocating in New York in 1992.
Ward Shelley is known as a performance artist, a kinetic artist, a visionary prankster, and the make of intricate “maps”. These chronicle the development of artistic movements and historic evolutions that challenge casual reading. Ward was known for his object-oriented work prior to 1990 when he lived in Miami and was associated with the Barbara Gillman Gallery. After leaving Miami in the early 90s, Ward earned his Masters at NYU and has lived and worked in New York ever since.
The artists in this exhibition bring a lifelong dedication to the creative process; what turns up when they inhabit their work space day after day, year after year, decade after decade. All three celebrate the idea of exploration to sustain their very personal evolutions.
