Acclaimed Haitian-American classical violinist Daniel Bernard Roumain (DBR) teams up with members of the Detroit-based Sphinx Symphony Orchestra, the only all Black and Latino orchestra, and The Harlem Chamber Players, for Filter, an explosive evening of music. Known for fusing classical music with a myriad of soundscapes, DBR has carried a reputation for himself as a passionately innovative composer, performer, violinist, and band leader. Together, this group of musicians will play a mixture of classical works and urban contemporary music, a concert for people of all ages, backgrounds and musical tastes!
Having carved a reputation for himself as an innovative composer, performer, violinist, and bandleader, Haitian-American artist Daniel Bernard Roumain (DBR) melds his classical music roots with his own cultural references and vibrant musical imagination. Proving that he’s “about as omnivorous as a contemporary artist gets” (New York Times), DBR is perhaps the only composer who has collaborated and performed with Philip Glass, Cassandra Wilson, Bill T. Jones, and Lady Gaga. He’s received commissions from Carnegie Hall, the Brooklyn Academy of Music (BAM), the Library of Congress, and the sports channel ESPN. He’s appeared on American Idol (FOX), America’s Assignment (CBS Evening News), E:60 (ESPN) and been voted one of the “Top 100 New Yorkers” (New York Resident), “Top 40 Under 40 business people” (Crain’s New York Business), “Top 5 Tomorrow’s Newsmakers” (1010 WINS Radio), and spotlighted as a “New Face of Classical Music” (Esquire Magazine). Most recently DBR has created a new evening length-work, Symphony for the Dance Floor, for the 2011 BAM Next Wave Festival and ASU Gammage, and composed music for the Atlanta Ballet, Home in 7, with the choreographer Amy Seiwert and the poet Marc Bamuthi Joseph.
The Sphinx Symphony is the unique all Black and Latino orchestra comprised of top professionals from around the country. This ensemble includes past and current members of the New York Philharmonic, Cleveland Orchestra, Los Angeles Philharmonic, Met Opera Orchestra, Detroit, Atlanta, Baltimore, Milwaukee, Cincinnati, St. Louis and Puerto Rico Symphonies, as well as faculty members of leading music institutions, including Peabody and New England Conservatories, Harlem School of the Arts, Rutgers University and the University of Michigan. This ensemble fulfills a unique multi-purpose role: its members serve as mentors to our young musicians both on stage and through providing master classes and lectures, in addition to promoting works by Black and Latino composers.
The Harlem Chamber Players is an ethnically diverse collective of professional musicians dedicated to bringing affordable and accessible live classical music to people in the Harlem community and beyond. In addition, The Harlem Chamber Players seek to build an audience for classical music in general through community and educational outreach, as well as through collaborations with Harlem’s other arts organizations, schools and cultural institutions. The Harlem Chamber Players not only bring live chamber music to underserved neighborhoods in the Harlem community, but also create opportunities for classically trained minority musicians.
