The tradition of making jewelry as “wearable art” has been established over the years by great artists such as Alexander Calder, Pablo Picasso, Louise Nevelson, Louise Bourgeois and Anish Kapoor, just to name a few. These artists created striking pieces of jewelry in which they incorporated elements from their artwork aesthetic scaled down to a “wearable” format. There are so many great examples throughout time, especially from the Modern period up to today, that a selection of jewelry made by famous artists led to the recent exhibition “Picasso to Koons: Artist as Jeweler”, at the Museum of Arts and Design of New York.
Following in these artists’ footsteps, Carolina Sardi started designing and making her own line of jewelry toward the end of 2011. This has resulted in this new line of pieces by the artist, based on her trademark sinuous organic shapes and “constellation” installations of the past two years. The intricate necklaces replicate her sophisticated sculptures, and her earrings simulate metallic mobiles. Her pendants look like elements extracted from her installations, and her rings are mostly based on her series titled Associations, in which abstract forms are often clustered into one. Sardi’s pieces are individually hand-crafted in a limited edition of 25, and all are signed by the artist. Works can be produced in either sterling silver or 18 karat gold.
Carolina Sardi was born in Argentina and currently lives and works in Miami, Florida She received a MFA in Sculpture, from the Facultad de Bellas Artes, Universidad Nacional de La Plata in Argentina. Her work has had several international solo exhibitions throughout Europe and the United States and is in many important public and private collections. 2013 marks her debut in the world of jewelry.
