The exhibit showcases over twenty recent collages created from 2010 to 2012. These are complex and hauntingly beautiful artworks featuring Julio Antonio’s unique style. In the artist’s own words: “My work is based on the struggle between the conscious and the unconscious, the conclusive and the inconclusive, satire and tragedy, the poetic and the dramatic. In this series of works titled La Isla Sufrida (The Suffering Island), the collage technique helps me to break my usual technical approaches, and it requires me to improvise. That is where the fight for creation begins, the quest to attain a content that will never be pre-established and that, due to my obsession with the island, will always concur with one of the themes of the island that suffers.”
Julio Antonio is a Cuban visual artist born in Havana in 1950. He graduated from the San Alejandro Academy of Fine Arts and the Instituto Superior de Arte in Cuba. He has lived and worked in Miami since 1987.
