December 2012.

University of Miami Frost School of Music student Asiya Korepanova, 28, of Russia won the gold medal and performed as one of seven piano finalists out of 46 competitors from sixteen countries in the 2012 Wideman International Piano Competition in Shreveport, Louisiana last week. She performed Prokofiev’s Concerto No. 2 in G minor, Op. 16, for her musical selection.

Korepanova was named “First Prize Gold Medal Winner” at the end of the competition, earning a $5,000 prize. Korepanova’s win, the William Peyton Shehee and Virginia Kilpatrick Shehee Award, will provide the opportunity to perform at numerous venues around the U.S. next year including performances with the Shreveport Symphony Orchestra, the Northwest Florida Symphony and the South Arkansas Symphony Orchestra, among others.

Asiya Korepanova has been playing the piano since the age of 4 and currently studies piano with Santiago Rodriguez at the Frost School of Music, where she is majoring in Keyboard Performance and concertizes regularly.

The competition is named in honor of the late Nena Plant Wideman, former member of the Centenary College faculty and noted local piano instructor, who spearheaded the first competition. After her death in 1983, the Shreveport Symphony named the competition in her honor and established an endowment to make the event possible every year.
