Alma Fine Art reopens in Wynwood Arts District featuring “Vidente”, the new series of work by Marta María Pérez Bravo and “Implications”, a group show dedicated to photography.

In “Vidente”, Marta María Pérez Bravo presents a selection of black and white videos of short duration that are shown in a continuous loop. Here the artist introduces a new, different approach to her work, accompanied by the use of a new medium. She reinvents herself and creates new ways to explore the subjects that are and have been the center of her work. She successfully makes use of universal gestures in a personal way to get her message across. Although the symbols and expressions are known and understood in the same way around the world, she places them in a context that makes them belong to her and her story.

Marta María Pérez Bravo was born in Cuba and currently lives in Mexico. She is best known for her black and white photography and her recurrent theme of Afro-Cuban religions. She has recently received a grant from the Cisneros Fontanals Art Foundation (CIFO) due to her lifetime achievements. Pérez Bravo is now working with video as her main medium and presents us with elaborate installations.

Alma Fine Art is also presenting “Implications”, a group exhibition featuring Veronica Grassi, Paula Herrera, Diana Maguire, Roberto Martinez, and Yanina Monti; five contemporary photographers. This exhibition was put together with selected works that provide a look into the artists’ identity and self-perception.

The difference in form and composition helps these artists contrast and discern from each other, and, when presented together, the pieces achieve an impact through the change seen going from one artist to the next. Moreover, Roberto Martinez breaks with what would have been an all-women exhibition. His presence creates a pause and the invitation to reexamine the exhibition in its entirety. Put in Peter Galassi’s words, former Director of Photography at MoMA NY, “familiarity breeds inattention”, and this exhibition counts on several elements that create a disruption that separates the artists without isolating them.

Veronica Grassi was born in Buenos Aires, Argentina and is currently living in Miami, FL. Her work was recently shown in the Shanghai Art Fair, China, in May 2012. Paula Herrera is a drama teacher in Buenos Aires, Argentina, work that influences her approach to photography. Diana Maguire, also from Argentina, has been living in Miami, FL since 2001. She began as a performance artist but later turned to film photography. Roberto Martinez is a Cuban artist, former director of La Casona Gallery in Cuba. He is now working on photography as his main medium. Yanina Monti is an Argentinean digital photographer living in Miami since 2002 and has recently participated in the Arteamericas Art Fair.
