Born in Curaçao, Netherlands Antilles, Gabri Christa is an award-winning New York-based dancer, choreographer, and filmmaker. For over 20 years, her work in both dance and film has been recognized around the world. She is the recipient of a Guggenheim Fellowship and was invited to the Pangea Day Film Festival as “One of the World’s 100 Most Promising Filmmakers.” She is a member of the Screen Actors Guild, Women Make Movies, and New York Women in Film and Television. She is married to Living Colour guitarist Vernon Reid.
This program is presented by the non-profit Tigertail Productions, a South Florida leader in innovative cultural work. Says Tigertail Executive Director Mary Luft, “There has been a growing interest in dance film. We have wanted to create a project about dance on film since we first viewed Victoria Marks’ stunning Outside In with the English dance company CandoCo, and more recently Wim Wender’s spectacular Pina. Gabri Christa will bring our local dance community together to discuss the myriad possibilities of this genre.”
Christa began her film career in the early 80’s and has recently returned to the medium after dedicating the past 20 years to the field of dance. As part of her dance career she performed with the Bill T. Jones/Arnie Zane Dance Company. She has directed music videos among other projects, and has also acted in many commercials. This past June, she took part in Carrie Mae Weems’ “Slow Fade to Black,” a multi-media project headlined by musicians Esperanza Spalding and Gerri Allen.
Her short film High School received an ABC TV Award for Creative Excellence. All of her short films (Quarantine, Savoneta, High School, Domino, Ringshout) have screened as jury finalists in festivals that include Tokyo, Atlanta, Denver, Los Angeles, London, Amsterdam, New York (Lincoln Center), Monaca, Munich, Capetown, Shanghai, Kumming, Bejing, Salt Lake City as well as in several museums and galleries around the world.
Christa is currently in pre-production for Farewell My Paradise, the third installment in her film series, “Another Building” and is preparing to make her first feature-length film.
