Continuing a tradition of excellence nearly a quarter of a century in the making, Miami Dade College’s (MDC) premier performing arts series, MDC Live Arts, offers a powerful new season bursting with an impressive collection of dynamic performances from around the globe.
This much-anticipated season celebrates an exceptional diversity of cultures, media and genres, assembling artists with roots in countries on three continents, including Spain, Israel, Chile, Argentina and the U.S. Exceling in its role to bring the best contemporary and culturally specific performing arts to the region, MDC Live’s 22nd year continues to expose the MDC and South Florida communities to some of the hottest acts from the U.S. and abroad.
“This season is a perfect representation of our mission to be both a mirror of our diverse communities, as well as a beacon, presenting artists from throughout the U.S. and the world over who are forging new and innovative languages in a variety of disciplines,” said MDC Live Arts Executive Director Kathryn Garcia.
At the forefront of emerging trends in Spanish dance and flamenco, Nuevo Ballet Español opens the season Octubre 5 with their latest show, Cambio de Tercio. Two of Spain’s most influential choreographers will deliver a dazzling mix of traditional and contemporary styles, accompanied by four striking female dancers and a live flamenco band.
November ushers in the kaleidoscopic sounds of Grammy-winning conga player Poncho Sanchez, who will headline this year’s Jazz Under the Stars at Kendall Campus. Making its South Florida premiere, Yemen Blues will showcase its edgy, unique blend of world music, combining elements of pop, funk, Southern blues, West African and Middle Eastern influences on November 10.
The world-famous Rennie Harris Puremovement troupe, an ensemble of self-taught street dancers turned professional performance, celebrates its 20th anniversary with a tour of hip hop history that includes a stop in Miami on November 30.
Audiences will then be treated to one of Dance Magazine’s former “25 to Watch” when choreographer Kyle Abraham bring his extraordinary company, Abraham.in.Motion, to perform his latest work, Live! The Realest MC.
Heralded by The New York Times as one of the three companies in the country “making theater that matters,” the Austin, Texas-based Rude Mechanics takes a wild and inventive look at the cult of acting in The Method Gun, a satirical and celebratory piece exploring ideas of togetherness and loss. MDC Live Arts’ compelling theater offerings continue with the U.S. premiere of Chile’s Teatro Cinema in two trailblazing performances of Sin Sangre (Without Blood). Using the advanced media of video art, the six actors present live theater in a cinema film.
The enthralling 2012-2013 season closes with Argentina’s Pablo Aslan Quintet, who has brought the renowned music of tango master Astor Piazzola back to life.
Although less visible than the performances, the residency component of MDC Live Arts is vital to the mission of MDC’s Cultural Affairs Department, which strives not only to present excellence in the performing arts, but also to develop future artists and audiences through educational outreach.
Among the programs this season is an innovative, weeklong residency by Urban Bush Women, presented in partnership with the South Miami-Dade Cultural Arts Center. The acclaimed dancers will utilize the arts to explore issues of civic engagement, centered around the question Are We Democracy? The residency culminates with a student performance, constructed to spark audience interest in examining their aspirations and challenges around civic participation.
