Author and former school teacher Robens Chery comes to the African-American Research Library and Cultural Center (AARLCC) on Saturday, June 30, 2012 at 2 p.m. to discuss his book, “The Mindset of a Teen” published in a parent’s edition and a teens’ edition.
The author – a Broward County reading teacher for middle and high schools for five years – takes a profound look into the life of today’s teens as they deal with the struggles of decision making in our society and he addresses the challenges that parents encounter along the way. With issues such as teen pregnancy, gang violence, and high school dropout rates on the rise, our youth are faced more than ever with the yearning desire of approval and acceptance. The School Board of Broward County felt so strongly about Chery’s work that they purchased 1800 copies of the books and the accompanying workbooks. They let him speak directly to 300 teachers about the content of the book.
In the parent’s version of the book, Mr. Chery has provided additional chapters that provide insight and guidance to parents, educators, and mentors who are seeking ways to create meaningful dialogue with teens. In the teens’ book, he talks to youth about their dreams and goals, and their hurts and pain. “Has your growing up too fast been caused by that father missing in your life? Is that boy who says he ‘loves’ you pressuring you into having sex with him? Are you being bullied at school or having thoughts of joining a gang? Have you been tempted to sell drugs for some “bling’ or even use them? In the book, “The Mindset of a Teen,” the author provides tools to deal with these and other issues facing teens today.
Robens Chery is a motivational speaker and the founder and CEO of Principle Life Youth Development. More information about his work is available at www.principlelife.org.
