From October 2012 through May 2013.
Miami City Ballet recently announced its 2012-2013 season of dance in South Florida, which features new works by two of the world’s most innovative and sought-after choreographers: Alexei Ratmansky, regarded as classical ballet’s greatest choreographer, brings us Symphonic Dances, a dramatic, fast paced work set to the powerful Sergei Rachmaninoff score of the same name. It enters the repertory season following its one-night-only World Premiere performance at the company’s gala on March1, 2012; and 25-year-old Liam Scarlett, The Royal Ballet of London’s young, celebrated choreographer, has been invited back to Miami City Ballet to create a World Premiere ballet fresh on the heels of the triumphant success of his VISCERA, which had its World Premiere this past winter. Also, returning to the repertory after long absences, are works by the two leading choreographers of the 20th century: George Balanchine and Sir Frederick Ashton. Balanchine’s Apollo from 1928 with its ravishing Stravinsky score, and Ashton’s Les Patinuers – also called The Skating Party, with all the charm and nostalgia it’s been celebrated for since it was first seen in 1937. Rounding out the season will be many audience favorites: Jerome Robbins’ piano ballet Dances at a Gathering, Balanchine’s dark and turbulent La Valse, his Mozartian Divertimento No. 15 and his rowdy Slaughter on Tenth Avenue from the hit Rodgers and Hart Broadway musical On Your Toes. And, in a very different mood, Paul Taylor’s tango-flavored ballet Piazzolla Caldera.
The holiday season will once again feature George Balanchine’s The Nutcracker™ in Miami and Fort Lauderdale this December, a delightful treat for the entire family with beautiful sets, lavish costumes, dazzling special effects and Tchaikovsky’s glorious music, featuring a cast of over 100: talented children from South Florida performing with MCB’s international ballet stars.
The symphonic sounds of the Opus One Orchestra, under the direction of Maestro Gary Sheldon, also returns to play for all repertory programs.
The season runs October 2012 through May 2013 at the Adrienne Arsht Center in Miami, Broward Center in Fort Lauderdale and Kravis Center in West Palm Beach.
