The Mill & The Cross at O Cinema

Jan 12 through 15, 2012.

From Lech Majewski, one of Poland’s most acclaimed filmmakers, a visually inspired re-staging of Pieter Bruegel’s epic 1564 painting “Way to Calvary,” presented alongside the story of its creation – with Rutger Hauer as Bruegel, Michael York as his friend and art collector, and Charlotte Rampling as the inspiration for his Virgin Mary.

“It isn’t the artist, it’s the art that’s the star here, and Mr. Majewski lavishes sophisticated, enchanting detail on its re-creation…we are also left to savor an inspiring, alluring meditation about imagery and storytelling, the common coin of history, religion and art.” – The New York TImes

“Here is a film of great beauty and attention, and watching it is a form of meditation. Sometimes films take a great stride outside the narrow space of narrative tradition and present us with things to think about. “- Roger Ebert, Chicago Sun-Times

“An extraordinary example of both art-historical interpretation and CGI as passport to unknown lands…a moving-image tribute to the still image, with its ability to “wrestle the senseless moment to the ground.” – Village Voice
