Ryan Trecartin’s Any Ever at MOCA North Miami

From Jun 24 through Sept 4, 2011.

The Museum of Contemporary Art (MOCA), North Miami presents Ryan Trecartin’s Any Ever (2009-2010), a seven-movie epic video produced in Miami with collaborator Lizzie Fitch and other contributors ranging from friends and artists to professional child actors.

The presentation of Any Ever at MOCA will be the first time that the work will be shown in its entirety in Miami, the city that was not only the setting for the movies and inspiration for some of their content, but also a character within the works. For the exhibition, MOCA’s galleries will transform into spaces that are quasi-recognizable as particular public and private settings, anchored by key seating elements. These environments will poetically relate the sets and themes of the movies. Another iteration of Any Ever will simultaneously be on view at MoMA PS1 in New York from June 19 through September 3, 2011.

Ryan Trecartin (b.1981, Webster, Texas) came to Miami in 2008 for an artist residency through the Moore Space, an alternative arts space in Miami’s Design District.  He continued his stay in the city to produce the works in Any Ever.

Any Ever’s seven interconnected movies take viewers on an ecstatic ride through contemporary culture from Trecartin’s perspective. Trecartin blurs and redefines signifiers of race, gender, sexuality, and the very notion of fixed identity, bending the language and images of consumer and popular culture past their breaking points in order to render complex, multi-narrative stories.

The presentation of Any Ever at MOCA, North Miami is coordinated by Ruba Katrib, MOCA Associate Curator.

Ryan Trecartin (b. 1981) lives and works in Los Angeles. Any Ever has been exhibited at The Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles (2010), and internationally at The Power Plant, Toronto (2010), and The Istanbul Modern (2011). This year Any Ever will also be shown at MoMA PS1, New York and at the Musee d’Art Moderne de la Ville de Paris. Trecartin’s work has been exhibited at numerous international biennials including the Singapore Biennial (2011), Gwangju Biennial (2010), Liverpool Biennial (2010) and Whitney Biennial (2006).
