Ignacio Berroa was born in Havana, Cuba. He developed a passion for drums and by 1975, had become Cuba’s most prominent drummer. The 1980 Mariel boatlift, landed him in NYC where he met and spent the next 10 years as Dizzy Gillespie’s drummer. In addition, Ignacio has worked with a plethora of jazz luminaries, including, McCoy Tyner, Chick Corea, Freddie Hubbard, Jackie McLean, and Milt Jackson. Of course, he also leads his own band.
Ignacio will narrate his documentary film Afro-Cuban Jazz & Beyond followed by a concert performance with his trio playing the music of his acclaimed 2017 CD, Straight-ahead from Havana, that features the melodies of his homeland, from Ignacio’s perspective, that vary from folkloric to intense Afro-Cuban polyrhythms to straight-ahead swing. This is an exhilarating and unique perspective for music of this origin.
