The Moscow Virtuosi Chamber Orchestra will finish their North American tour with a date at Miami’s Adrienne Arsht Center. Led by violinist and conductor Vladimir Spivakov. The acclaimed chamber ensemble is comprised of top-ranking soloists and former principal chairs of the great orchestras of Russia, and this fall will be joined by the winner of the 2007 Cleveland Piano Competition, Alexander Ghindin, performing Mozart’s Piano Concerto No. 9. The concerts will also include solo violin performances by Maestro Spivakov, which is unique to this tour. The orchestra’s program will vary by city, and includes works by Boccherini, Schnittke, Shostakovich, Rossini and Tchaikovsky.
From its inception in 1978, the Moscow Virtuosi Chamber Orchestra has set the highest performance standards and has been recognized by critics from around the globe. The Washington Post has hailed the Virtuosi as “a dramatically unified ensemble” with “a sound that would put many full orchestras to shame” and the Seattle Post-Intelligencer remarked that they “shine brightly in tonal splendor.” Today, the Moscow Virtuosi Chamber Orchestra is one of the world’s preeminent chamber ensembles, treating its audiences to an inimitable performance style and a diverse repertoire ranging from Bach to Schnittke.
The Moscow Virtuosi has appeared in the world’s most prestigious concert halls, including London’s Royal Albert Hall, Vienna’s Musikverein, Amsterdam’s Concertgebouw, Paris’ Théâtre des Champs-Élysées, Tokyo’s Suntory Hall, and New York’s Carnegie Hall and Avery Fisher Hall, to name a few. Additionally, keeping with its audience-friendly philosophy, the orchestra frequently performs in smaller venues and cities. The Virtuosi regularly collaborate with soloists including, Evgeny Kissin, Pinchas Zukerman, Mischa Maisky, Denis Matsuev Olga Kern, Natalie Stutzman, and Michala Petri among others.
In 1978, virtuoso violinist and conductor Vladimir Spivakov joined with a group of his friends and artistic associates-most of whom were winners of international music competitions-to found the Moscow Virtuosi Chamber Orchestra. Launching an artistic group at an artist’s initiative was by no means common practice in the Soviet Union, since only governmental bodies could authorize the establishment of professional orchestras. It was not until 1983 that the Moscow Virtuosi gained official government recognition and support. Since 2003, the Moscow Virtuosi Chamber Orchestra has made its home at the Moscow International Performing Arts Center, affectionately known as “The House of Music.” Each year, the orchestra performs over 100 concerts, mostly on tours. The Moscow Virtuosi have toured extensively throughout the world, including appearances in Europe, Japan, and North and South America. The orchestra made its triumphant U.S. debut in 1987 and has since undertaken 10 highly acclaimed tours of this country.
Exceptional artistic talent, a concern for musical details and nuances, creative interpretation of composers’ concepts, and love-both for the pieces performed and for the audience-set the Moscow Virtuosi Orchestra apart from many other chamber orchestras. To excite the audience emotionally and to engage each listener intellectually, to educate the audience, and to spark a love for chamber music in the heart of every listener are the orchestra’s primary goals. The Moscow Virtuosi have participated in famous international music festivals in Salzburg, Austria; Edinburgh, Scotland; Florence and Pompeii, Italy; Lucerne and Gstaad, Switzerland; Schleswig-Golstein and the Rheingau, Germany; and many other locales. The Moscow Virtuosi Chamber Orchestra is the Resident Orchestra, and Mr. Spivakov the Artistic Director, of France’s widely acclaimed Colmar International Festival, which marks its 20th anniversary in July 2008.
The Moscow Virtuosi and Vladimir Spivakov have an extensive discography on the BMG/RCA Victor Red Seal label. Their recorded repertoire ranges from Vivaldi, Bach, Haydn, Mozart and Schubert to such 20th-century composers as Prokofiev, Penderecki, Hartmann, Shostakovich and Schnittke. In 2009, Vladimir Spivakov and Moscow Virtuosi celebrated the 30th anniversary of the orchestra, with a special world concert tour, performing to a sold-out audiences in the most prestigious venues, such as the London’s Barbican, New York’s Avery Fisher Hall, San Francisco’s Davies Hall, and Great Hall of the Moscow Conservatory, among others.
