New World School of the Arts’ launches the 2010-2011 Theater season with the 1933 epic comedy The Girl from Maxim’s. Directed by NWSA theater faculty Andrew Noble, this powerful production, with costumes designed by Estela Vrancovich shows off the craftsmanship and splendor of Victorian garb through gorgeous, rich fabrics, satins and silks, and miles of lace, tulle, braids and feathers. “Undoubtedly a visual delight”, said Gail Garrisan, Interim Dean of Theater, “With multiple dresses used to make one outfit when dresses were somewhat like couches, is a real testament of Victorian plumage in the Moulin Rouge era.”
The six-day schedule begins on Friday, October 8th, 7:30 p.m. at the Louise O. Gerrits Theatre, 25 NE 2nd Street in downtown Miami. Additional performances will be on October 9th, 14th and 16th at 7:30 p.m.; Sunday, October 10th and 17th at 2:00 p.m. General admission is $12, students and seniors $5 and can be purchased online at nwsa.mdc.edu.
Reaching the heights of farcical lunacy, the plot in The Girl from Maxim’s is a rollercoaster ride that begins with a night on the town, and adds comical circumstance to comical circumstance in high speed action involving a beautiful chanteuse, marital infidelity, the appearance of an archangel, an “ecstatic” chair, a General who joined the French Foreign Legion “to forget”, mistaken identity, an engagement party, and ghosts!
“This is a challenging exercise for the NWSA Theatre Division’s combined Senior and Junior college students performing 33 character roles in a three act masterpiece. The Girl from Maxim’s (La Dame de chez Maxim) shares something in common with G.B. Shaw’s “Pygmalion”, a play from the same era, that also has a working class girl at the center of its story and similarly satirizes middle-class pretentions, finding shock value in the French equivalent to the infamous faux-pas, ‘not bloody likely!’,” commented NWSA faculty and director of the play, Andrew Noble.
Directed by Andrew Noble with period movement and dances choreographed by Edward Rozinsky, costumes by Estela Vrancovich, set and lighting by Jeff Quinn, and technical direction by Dorset Noble.
Theater and music theater students at NWSA hone their craft through acting technique, movement and speech classes, focusing on fundamentals of physical and emotional preparation. With performance at its core, training is based on the classical texts and the principles of drama as well as practical incursions into the contemporary and experimental edges of theater. Consequently, alumni are found performing on stage nationally and internationally and their talent and vision are recognized and highly regarded in the industry.
